Adrian M. Smith, a Republican, is in his fourth two-year term representing Nebraska’s 3rd Congressional District.
Born Dec. 19, 1970, in Scottsbluff, Smith is a sixth-generation Nebraskan. He graduated from Gering High School in 1989, attended Liberty University in Virginia and earned a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1993.
A year after graduating from college, Smith was beginning a four-year term on the Gering City Council. He ran for the District 48 seat in the state legislature in 1998, and served through 2006.
With term limits preventing a third term in the legislature, Smith ran for the 3rd District seat being vacated in 2006 by former Nebraska football coach Tom Osborne. Osborne, also a Republican, chose to run for governor that year.
Smith was sworn into the House on Jan. 3, 2007. He is a member of the congressional Tea Party Caucus.
